Dates from the official sources, Vienna time. The university's own information always decides.
In short
SIP 4a and SIP 5a are integrated exams that close a semester or study year of the Vienna medical degree. As a nostrification candidate you do not sit them in full: you take only the parts your decision (Bescheid) prescribes. MedUni Vienna's registration form for nostrification candidates lists three blocks for SIP 4a (surgical subjects, dermatology and venereology, internal medicine) and seven tertials for SIP 5a, from neurology to emergency and intensive care medicine. All prescribed parts of one SIP are taken at the same sitting, and you register with the form for nostrification candidates.
What a SIP is
SIP stands for Summative integrierte Prüfung, an integrated exam that closes a stage of the degree. MedUni Vienna's general information on exams says it tests what was taught in that semester or study year: SIP 4a covers one semester, SIP 5a a whole study year. Each SIP takes in every block or tertial (Tertial), the teaching units of that stage.
None of this is decided in general for nostrification candidates. Your Bescheid, the written decision on your application, says whether you take any part of a SIP and which parts. Read it first; it is the document that counts.
The three parts of SIP 4a
MedUni Vienna's registration form for nostrification candidates lists these three parts for SIP 4a. On the form you tick the ones your Bescheid prescribes:
- Block 25: surgical subjects (Chirurgische Fächer)
- Block 26: dermatology and venereology
- Block 27: internal medicine (Innere Medizin)
The seven parts of SIP 5a
For SIP 5a the same form lists seven tertials:
- T1: neurology
- T2: psychiatry
- T3: paediatrics (Kinderheilkunde)
- T4: gynaecology (Frauenheilkunde)
- T5: ophthalmology (Augenheilkunde)
- T6: ear, nose and throat (HNO)
- T7: emergency and intensive care medicine
How the exam works and what you need to pass
MedUni Vienna holds these exams either as multiple choice or as an open exam with short-answer questions. In the multiple-choice format every question has five options. Some questions ask for the single best answer (one best answer); others tell you how many answers are correct, and you pick that many (pick N). Short-answer exams are used only at resit sittings with few candidates.
The pass rules come from MedUni Vienna's grading criteria. Each block and each tertial has its own threshold of 60 percent correct answers, and SIP 4a and SIP 5a also have an overall threshold of 60 percent. A block or tertial is passed only when both are reached. Because scores are rounded, the exact point limits can differ slightly from 60 percent; they are shown in the published results of each exam (Ergebnisaushang). How these rules apply when you sit only some parts is a question for the Studienabteilung, the university's student administration office.
How nostrification candidates register
Nostrification candidates register for their SIP parts only with their own registration form. Fill it in on the computer and send it within the registration window from your student e-mail account to the address printed on the form. MedUni Vienna does not consider registrations that are incomplete or arrive outside the window.
You cannot split the parts across sittings: everything your Bescheid prescribes for one SIP is taken on the same date. Sittings and registration windows are in MedUni Vienna's exam calendar. The form says the exam notice with the time and place comes out no later than three weeks before the exam.
Practising part by part
MedPrüf has a question bank of curated practice questions for SIP 4a and SIP 5a. They are not official exam questions. You can practise the subjects of exactly the parts your Bescheid prescribes and build a study plan that ends on your official sitting.

Do I have to sit the whole SIP 4a as a nostrification candidate?
No, only the parts your Bescheid prescribes. You select them on the registration form for nostrification candidates and take all of them at the same sitting.
Can I register for the SIP through MedCampus?
Nostrification candidates use their own registration form, sent by e-mail from the student account within the registration window. MedCampus, the university's online system, is how students of the regular degree register for the SIP.
How many options does a SIP question have?
Five, in the multiple-choice format. The question either asks for the one best answer or tells you how many correct answers to choose.
When will I know the time and place of my exam?
From MedUni Vienna's exam notice. The registration form says it comes out no later than three weeks before the exam.
Can I take the SIP parts in English?
No. The MedUni Vienna Merkblatt says the supplementary exams of nostrification candidates are held in German.
