Dates from the official sources, Vienna time. The university's own information always decides.
In short
The Stichprobentest is the test of Austria's nostrification procedure for medicine. All Austrian medical universities run it together, with sittings spread across Innsbruck, Vienna and Graz. It covers ten clinical subjects with 250 questions in total and is held electronically. You get one attempt. Your result feeds into the investigation procedure and helps decide which exams your decision (Bescheid) prescribes afterwards.
The ten subjects and how many questions each has
The MedUni Vienna Merkblatt and the Medical University of Innsbruck's dates PDF list these subjects:
- internal medicine, surgery and paediatrics: 30 questions each
- neurology, gynaecology, dermatology and emergency medicine: 25 questions each
- ear, nose and throat (ENT), psychiatry and ophthalmology: 20 questions each
What the test looks like on the day
The test is held electronically. Innsbruck's guide to the question formats lists multiple-choice questions with one correct or best answer, and also matching tasks, gap texts, image analysis and free-text tasks. The Medical University of Innsbruck has a demo exam on its website, with no medical questions, so you can try the exam software beforehand.
A general language dictionary is allowed; medical dictionaries and electronic aids are not, according to the Merkblatt. Register within the deadline at the university where you filed your nostrification application.
What your result changes
The Stichprobentest is not an exam in the sense of the Universities Act; it is a step in the investigation procedure. According to the Merkblatt, a subject counts as passed (positiv absolviert) when at least 60 percent of its questions are answered correctly. If your degree is comparable in principle, the Merkblatt sets two paths: with six or more passed subjects, your Bescheid prescribes exams for the subjects you did not pass; with five or fewer, it prescribes exams from the regular degree programme. In either case a scientific thesis can be added.
Rezeptierkunde and forensic medicine are prescribed whatever your result. The details are in your university's Merkblatt, and your own Bescheid is what counts.
How to prepare
Work back from your sitting. The Merkblatt expects you, as a rule, to sit the next possible date after you apply, so that date sets your preparation time. Plan all ten subjects, because each one is scored on its own.
- Give every subject time, including the ones with 20 questions, and start with the subjects you feel least sure about.
- Practise in German from the start: in the test only a language dictionary is allowed, not a medical one.
- Do the Innsbruck demo exam so the software holds no surprises on the day.
- Practise against the clock, then look at which subjects still feel shaky.

Can I take the Stichprobentest a second time?
No. According to the Merkblatt, applicants can take part only once; the test cannot be repeated.
Where do I register for the Stichprobentest?
At the university where you filed your nostrification application, within the registration deadline, even if the test takes place at another university.
Can I bring a dictionary to the Stichprobentest?
A language dictionary, yes, according to the MedUni Vienna Merkblatt. Medical dictionaries and electronic aids are not allowed.
Is the Stichprobentest an exam I have to pass?
It is not an exam in the sense of the Universities Act. Each subject counts as passed at 60 percent correct answers or more, and the result helps decide which exams your nostrification decision prescribes.
Can I take the Stichprobentest in English?
Plan for German. The Merkblatt says sufficient German is required for the Stichprobentest, and weak German is no reason to change a result afterwards. A language dictionary is allowed in the test.
