Dates from the official sources, Vienna time. The university's own information always decides.
In short
At the Medical University of Innsbruck, your Stichprobentest result decides which exams your decision (Bescheid) prescribes. Its information sheets set two paths. With six or more fields passed, the Bescheid prescribes exams only for the fields you did not pass; with five or fewer, it prescribes the exams of the regular degree. Either way a scientific thesis can be added. After a passed Stichprobentest, the university prescribes Rezeptierkunde (prescription writing) and forensic medicine in every case. You register by e-mail with the university's nostrification office.
What your Stichprobentest result decides
The Medical University of Innsbruck's information sheets count the Stichprobentest as passed (positiv absolviert) when at least six of its fields (Fachbereiche) are passed. In that case the Bescheid prescribes exams only for the fields you did not pass, possibly with a scientific thesis on top.
If fewer than six fields are passed, the Bescheid prescribes the exams of the regular degree: KMP 5A, KMP 5B, KMP 6A and KMP 6B (KMP is how Innsbruck names the exams of its own medical degree), again possibly with a scientific thesis. To take these supplementary exams you are admitted as a non-degree student (außerordentliche Studierende or außerordentlicher Studierender).
Supplementary exams after a passed Stichprobentest
For each field your Bescheid lists as a supplementary exam (Ergänzungsprüfung), the Medical University of Innsbruck gives this number of questions:
- internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics: 30 questions each
- neurology, gynaecology, dermatology: 25 questions each
- ear, nose and throat (ENT), psychiatry, ophthalmology: 20 questions each
- forensic medicine (Gerichtsmedizin): 14 questions
Format: mostly on screen, with two exceptions
A supplementary exam is passed, the Medical University of Innsbruck says, when you reach at least 60 percent in each subject. The exams are taken electronically, with two exceptions: Rezeptierkunde and emergency medicine.
In Innsbruck's Rezeptierkunde exam you write three prescriptions, which are then graded and which you explain orally. The prescriptions are based on a script the examiner sends you. Emergency medicine is an oral exam. For both, you receive the examiner's contact details once you have registered and arrange the date with the examiner yourself.
How to register in Innsbruck
You register for the supplementary exams by e-mail to nostrifizierung@i-med.ac.at. The electronic exams use the same dates and registration periods as the KMP exams of the regular degree. Registrations outside those periods are not allowed and are not considered.
Once you have your Bescheid, you complete your admission to the university within the general admission period. The Medical University of Innsbruck also publishes a document on the exam method with an introduction to its exam software.
How nostrification ends
When you have met every condition of your Bescheid within its deadline, the university grants the nostrification in a separate decision. That is not yet permission to work as a doctor: for that you need entry in the Austrian Medical Chamber's list of physicians (Ärzteliste).
German terms in the Innsbruck information sheets
Innsbruck's information sheets are in German. These words come up most:
- Fachbereich: a field of the Stichprobentest, scored on its own
- positiv absolviert: passed
- Nostrifizierungsbescheid: the decision that lists the exams you still have to take
- Ergänzungsprüfung: a supplementary exam prescribed in that decision
- KMP 5A to KMP 6B: the exams of Innsbruck's regular medical degree
- Rezeptierkunde: prescription writing, part of pharmacology
- Gerichtliche Medizin or Gerichtsmedizin: forensic medicine
- außerordentliche Studierende: non-degree student, your status while you take the exams

How many fields do I need to pass so that only some exams are prescribed?
At least six, according to the Medical University of Innsbruck. Your Bescheid then prescribes exams only for the fields you did not pass, possibly with a scientific thesis.
Is the Rezeptierkunde exam in Innsbruck written or oral?
Both. According to the Medical University of Innsbruck, you write three prescriptions, which are then graded and which you explain orally. You arrange the date with the examiner after registering.
Where do I register for the supplementary exams?
By e-mail to nostrifizierung@i-med.ac.at, within the registration periods. Registrations outside these periods are not considered.
Is Rezeptierkunde prescribed even after a very good Stichprobentest?
Yes. Because of differences between countries, the university prescribes exams in Rezeptierkunde and forensic medicine in every case after a passed Stichprobentest.
